چکیده

Pharmaceuticals have an important role in the treatment and prevention of disease in both humans and animals. Since they are designed either to be highly active or interact with receptors in humans and animals or to be toxic for many infectious organisms, they may also have unintended effects on animals and microorganisms in the environment. Therefore, the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in the environment and their potential effects on human and environmental health has become an active subject matter of actual research. There are several possible sources and routes for pharmaceuticals to reach the environment, but wastewater treatment plants have been identified as the main point of their collection and subsequent release into the environment, via both effluent wastewater and sludge. Conventional systems that use an activated sludge process are still widely employed for wastewater treatment, mostly because they produce effluents that meet required quality standards (suitable for disposal or recycling purposes), at reasonable operating and maintenance costs. The following chapter reviews the literature data on the occurrence of these microcontaminants in wastewater influent, effluent, and sludge, and on their removal during conventional wastewater treatment.

Analysis and removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater and drinking water

The occurrence of trace organic contaminants in wastewaters, their behaviour during wastewater treatment and drinking water production are the key issues in relation to the reuse of water resources. Elimination of different classes of emerging contaminants, such as surfactant degradates, pharmaceuticals and polar pesticides in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) was found to be rather low and co...

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants at the Spanish Mediterranean area of Valencia.

A survey on the presence of pharmaceuticals in urban wastewater of a Spanish Mediterranean area (Castellon province) was carried out. The scope of the study included a wide variety of pharmaceuticals belonging to different therapeutical classes. For this purpose, 112 samples, including influent and effluent wastewater, from different conventional wastewater treatment plants were collected. Two ...

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in a municipal wastewater treatment plant: mass balance and removal processes.

Occurrence and removal efficiencies of fifteen pharmaceuticals were investigated in a conventional municipal wastewater treatment plant in Michigan. Concentrations of these pharmaceuticals were determined in both wastewater and sludge phases by a high-performance liquid chromatograph coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer. Detailed mass balance analysis was conducted during the whole treatment p...

Occurrence, partition and removal of pharmaceuticals in sewage water and sludge during wastewater treatment.

During 8 sampling campaigns carried out over a period of two years, 72 samples, including influent and effluent wastewater, and sludge samples from three conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), were analyzed to assess the occurrence and fate of 43 pharmaceutical compounds. The selected pharmaceuticals belong to different therapeutic classes, i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,...

Distribution, mass load and environmental impact of multiple-class pharmaceuticals in conventional and upgraded municipal wastewater treatment plants in East China.

The occurrence, fate and environmental impact of 30 pharmaceuticals including sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, macrolides, dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors, β-blockers, antiepileptics, lipid regulators, and stimulants were studied in two municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in Wuxi City, East China. A total of 23 pharmaceuticals were detected in wastewater sampl...
